Guests:   Irv Babner, guest of his brother, Mel.

President Steve reminded the Haven From Hunger volunteers (listed above) of their assignments this coming Friday.  He passed around the sign-up sheet for the District Membership/Foundation Conference to be held on September 17th.  Grace Martins and her GSE team will be making a presentation there.  So far, eight members have said that they need to learn more about Rotary so they'll be there.  That's great!! (Ed.:  Unless you know everything about obtaining and retaining members and how Rotary spends your donations, you should attend this conference.)

a1. Club

The International Festival will be on September 14th.  Nichole Nelsen is the committee chair.  She passed around a sign-up sheet.  If you haven't given Nichole your volunteer time preference, let her know soon.

Herb Harris encouraged members to register for NorthEast link on September 26-27.   You can attend the whole 25 hours (Friday 3:00 to Saturday 4:00), or parts--just Friday, just Saturday.  Whatever you choose to do, the club will pay your way.  Once you register online, you'll receive an e-mail from Hal Gerow.  Forward that immediately to Treasurer Loring Merrow so he can pay the bill.  Herb mentioned that there were four Ambassadorial Scholarship winners.  One will receive $24,000 for a two-year program; one will receive $16,000 for a 6-month cultural program; two will receive $11,000 each for 3-month cultural programs.  The cultural programs are for language study.  A total of $62,000 of your donations to the Foundation was awarded. a.2. Vocational

 Fred deNapoli and Grace Martins are on the District selection committee for the Outbound GSE team to South Africa.  The team will be going to Johannesburg at the end of February, returning at the end of March.  If you'd like to be considered as the team leader--as Grace was a few months ago--contact Fred or Grace.  And if you know any non-Rotarian between the ages of 20 and 45 who might be interested in going, lead them to Fred and Grace.

President Steve reminded us that the Golf Tournament is fast approaching--September 22nd.  He circulated a sheet to list what each member will be providing--golfers, sponsorships, gift certificates, etc.  Peggy Pedro gave President Steve a listing of golfers and sponsors from the City Council's 2006 Golf Tournament.  President Steve's staff will follow-up.  (From last week:  So far, 40 golfers have signed up.  Perfecto's Caffe and Peabody Financial will sponsor the breakfast; Outback Steakhouse will sponsor the luncheon; and there'll be an Acura MDX as a hole-in-one prize, thanks to Acura of Peabody. Thanks to all!!  Joanne Donovan is collecting ALL information, so e-mail her with any donations, golfers, sponsors, etc. as soon as you know about them.)a3. Community

President Steve introduced our guest speaker, Don Finegold.  After working over 50 years in the leather industry--first in Peabody, then in Maine, then in Salem, Don retired.  Not wanting to just sit, he continued to ski and play tennis, which he still does, at 82 years of age.  Then he decided to write.  He's written 5 books, one of which he's turned into a screenplay, hoping for Hollywood to pick it up.  His first book was  Interlude, followed by The Pact, The Pemberton Murders and The Investigator.  The fifth book is currently awaiting publication.  All of his books take place on the North Shore, some real town names--Lynn, Lynnfield, Boston--and some not--Pemberton is really Peabody and Stanton is really Salem.  And many of his high school friends are in his novels--some with their real names, some not.  Kudos to Mike Eidelman, Peggy Lyons, and Peggy Pedro who knew authors by some clues that Don gave.  Don said that everyone can write--just write about what you know.  Once a book is written, which takes Don about a year, there's a 3-month cycle before it hits the shelves.  He felt that it's crucial to have an agent to get published.  Don's website is donefinefgold.com.

Mel Babner reminded everyone to sell the Entertainment Books.  He thanked Fred deNapoli  and Chuck Holden for taking 10 and 5 books, respectively.

Reminders:

SAVE THE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 17TH, from 3:00 TO 8:00PM.  This is the date of the District's Membership and Foundation Forum at the Sheraton Ferncroft.  This is where all Rotarians will learn more about how Rotary functions.  And with this knowledge and tips from the Membership segment, we'll better be able to attract and retain more members.  Please make every effort to attend.

NE Link is scheduled for September 26-27, in Worcester--basically 24 hours.  But sign up for some of the program or all of it.  The only way to register is online at :  http://www.northeastlink.org/html/nel_rotreg_active.shtml.  Go to the site to learn more about NE Link.  And don't forget, unless you'd like to make a contribution, the club will pay for your attendance at NE Link and at the District Conference.

*

Did you know that Larry Lucchino had been an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1973-4?  NELink (September 26-27) is trying to get him to speak.  The snag may be that the Red Sox are playing the Evil Empire (aka the Yankees) that weekend.  For those who don't read the Rotarian (but you should!!), this month's issue tells us that the Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the LARGEST PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN THE WORLD!!  By the way, the other locally well-known person who had been an Ambassadorial Scholar is former Lt. Governor Kerry Healy.

*

There's a Golf Committee meeting every Monday at 9:00AM at Teddy Bettencourt's office at 30 Main Street.  Start thinking about and asking potential sponsors as well as golfers.  There are only 2+ weeks left until September 22nd!!   President Steve wants everyone to obtain a "Perfect 10"--a combination of 10 golfers, sponsors, donation items.  He's working on a flyer and registration form which he'll e-mail soon.

 *

We'll be selling Penny Candy at the International Festival.  Can one still buy candy for a penny? President Steve suggested that we sell bags for the kids (or adults) to fill with candy for a price yet-to-be-determined.  Nichole Nelsen is committee chair.

*

The Taste Of The North Shore now has three restaurants signed up.  And Bob Sweeney is working on the tickets.  They should be ready for the Golf Tournament.  The Chamber of Commerce will be sending out e-mail reminders to "Save the Date" of March 24th, 2009.

*

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel Babner.  Every nickel helps!!  Mel Thanks Dick Berg, Ralph Raynard and Gayle Cavanaugh for their generous contributions.

There must be a ton of empty beer cans and bottles from July 4th weekend and all summer--please give them to Mel.

*

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.

 *

Happy Dollars:  Acting Sergeant-at-arms Grace Martins collected $76.

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.   Fred deNapoli had a letter to the Editor published in the Salem News on September 4th.

*

50-50 Raffle: The pool was $49.  Neither Fred deNapoli nor President Steve picked the KING OF CLUBS or the $50 Joker.

*
