Haven From Hunger:
Friday, September 9, 2011
Team Assignments: CATHY GRAVEL--thanks Cathy for covering both ends!! (Meal Pickup), CATHY GRAVEL (Salad and Cookies)
Arrive at at 71 Wallis Street, Peabody.
If you're unable to attend on the specified date, it's your responsibility to locate a replacement. Please inform the meal pickup person of the change and the replacement of your assigned responsibility. Thanks. Look at NEWS and Haven From Hunger Schedule for the future schedule and specific responsibilities. See website for further information:
Martha stepped in for President Steve and began by making a Membership suggestion that she had read about. In another district, there's a program called "One and Done". Each member is assigned a date to bring a potential member to the meeting and follow-up with that person. She'll forward details to us. She had also expected to see the Beverly and Salem Membership Chairs at our meeting. Apparently, there was a communication gap, as no-one visited us.
Peggy L ordered only apple pies (250) for the International Festival. The blueberry pies were way too expensive. She circulated the volunteer sign-up sheet. She'll also have it to circulate next week, but members can e-mail her to let her know when they want to work.
Bob C said that the number of golfers is down this year. Many businesses and banks are cutting back. The tournament is only 11 days away and no-one has brought in any wine bottles for the raffle. Bob urged us to do so next week. Does anyone have sleeves of golf balls to donate for the golfers' bags?
Cathy said that she has completed the District Grant application and is just awaiting the PEF letter so it can be submitted.
Herb mentioned that no-one (himself included) stepped up to work with Cathy at Haven From Hunger on Friday. Cathy said that she could do it with her daughter. MANY THANKS, CATHY!!
Mel reminded us to keep displaying and selling the Entertainment Books. Each book sold gives us $15 profit!! He once again thanked Vanessa and Metro Credit Union for their fine display of books at the CU.
Herb mentioned that our scholarship winners' picture received great placement in the Salem News--in full color!! After seeing the banner for how many years (?), he realized that it has our website as rotarypeabody.com, not rotarypeabody.org. Martha said she can have that fixed.
Plans for the Mayoral Forum on October 6th are well underway. We should have a good turnout. Herb commented that Deanne at the Chamber has been treating this Rotary meeting as a Chamber event. The Press Release barely mentions the fact that we want the candidates to discuss community involvement and assisting those less fortunate. And the Chamber Newsletter implies that the meeting is a 100% business-oriented program. Herb said that we appreciate the work that the Chamber has done and we never would get the attendance without the Chamber's help. President Steve has said that he'll run this meeting as a regular weekly meeting--with the exception of the weekly raffle and happy dollars.
DG Swami will make the annual District Governor visit to the club next week.
*********************************
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms John collected $35.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
*********************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither Herb nor the Peggy L picked the new winning card, the 8 of Spades, nor the $50 Joker. So no-one won the huge jackpot of $25.
*********************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Brian Cassidy, asks that you tell him of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.
**********************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
**********************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Mel thanks former peabody Rotary Club member and Past President Dick Berg as well as Beth Hoffman of Temple Ner Tamid for their generous contributions.

In the supermarket was a man pushing a cart which contained a screaming, bellowing baby. The gentleman kept repeating softly, "Don't get excited, Albert; don't scream, Albert; don't yell, Albert; keep calm, Albert."
A woman standing next to him said, "You certainly are to be commended for trying to soothe your son, Albert."
The man looked at her and said, "Lady, I'm Albert!"
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
