****************************************
Today was our monthly general business meeting. President Cathy handed out agendas for all to follow.
Gary did not have a Secretary's report.
Having just returned from vacation on Wednesday, Loring did not have a Treasurer's report.
Rather than wait until the end of the year, Foundation Chair Peggy Pedro filed our reports to RI for the first quarter and will keep up as the year progresses so our club receives proper credit for our donations.
Membership Chair Steve Smith thanked the four members who submitted potential members' names to him. He'll be very happy to help once you give him names--he'll give you Rotary "propaganda" or he'll follow up for you. But as much as our small club does--and it's a lot!!--we could do so much more with more members. Or even do the same with less effort for each of us. President Cathy added that everyone should invite a potential member to our October 15th meeting which will feature the Mayor (hopefully) and City Councillors. Steve Smith and Peggy Pedro will be the club's representatives at the District Membership/Foundation seminar on October 1st. Any others who want to go to this terrfic event should contact Peggy P.
Literacy Chair Martha reported that the S.T.O.P. program will begin in January at the Carroll School. She added that the Board has approved a donation of $1,000 to Rachel Williams's Adopt-A-School in Afghanastan program. President Cathy said that this donation will help fulfill our club's Foundation donation goal and our Outreach goal. We hope to present the check to Rachel when DG Ingrid visits on October 29th.
Scholarship Chair Peggy Lyons was not at the meeting, but President Cathy said that Peggy is working on revising the application and expects to get information out sooner than in previous years.
Program Chair Grace was also absent from our meeting. But President Cathy mentioned that we have the month of October scheduled except the 1st. Perhaps Tom Gould will make it then--he missed his speaking engagement last month.
Media Chair Herb said that he's trying to get at least one--perhaps more--article into the papers every month. The next picture should be of the "Rotary Meets Here" at the Marriott once it's installed. He will also submit an article about the meeting of October 15th. Not mentioned at the meeting, but remembered by your editor, is the fact that very frequesntly there are articles pushing the Entertainment Book--Thanks Mel!!
President Cathy reported that all pies were sold at the International Festival and we made $1,300! And it appears that we'll profit at least $5,000 from the golf tournament--$15,000+ split three ways.
The Kids day program has been re-scheduled for October 3rd (from rainy September 12th), from Noon until 4:00. Helping on this day will give you a make-up meeting. PP-E Steve Morad will be picking up Rotary signs and posts from Bob Wood. He'll coordinate with Cathleen about the installation of the "Rotary Meets here" sign at the Marriott. Mel reminded everyone to bring cans and bottles and thanked Dick Berg, who seems to donate the most. I hope they're soft drink cans. And Mel reminded us to sell the Entertainment Books. So far, sales are slow.
President Cathy reported that October 24th will be Rotary's World Polio Day. So on October 22nd, bring in all your loose change (and perhaps dollar bills) to kick off our collection process. North Shore Bank will have collection cans at all Peabody teller windows until the end of the collection process in January.
PP-E Steve Morad and Vanessa, Taste of the North Shore Co-Chairs, report that the tickets are in. Steve said that in the past, each member was given 10 raffle tickets to sell. But because we have so few members, each will be given 15 to sell. Another reason to get more members!! Now that the busy September events are over, focus will be on the Taste.
President Cathy announced that the board approved donations of $1,000 to Rachel Williams's Adopt A School project and $500 to buy an ad for Citizens For Adequate Housing Raising The Roof event. The amount is less than last year because we're now serving dinners there once a month.
Peggy Pedro said that we're going to have an after-hours program to have people sell their jewelry to Stan Paul. The club will receive 25% of Stan's proceeds.
Vanessa is asking members of the club to sponsor her on her October 3rd Walk for Juvenile Diabetes.
Martha mentioned that next Wednesday, the Library will host its annual Starry Starry Night at the Smith Barn.
President Cathy asked that everyone look at the roster that Gary had sent out. Let him know if any information is incorrect or missing (are all your birthdays, spouses' birthdays and wedding anniversaries there?--we just care about day and month, not year). President Cathy further said that Rudy resigned from the club but will continue to support us. WE NEED MORE MEMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PP-E Steve Morad said, "Just ask someone to a meeting!"
Reminder from last week: We're putting together a care package for Grace's son who's serving in the Marines in Afghanastan. She'll give us a wish list soon.
*
Ed.'s note: Another superb upcoming event is NorthEast Link where you'll get to meet and hear from Ambassadorial Scholars from all around the world. This year it will be in Boxborough and will be on Saturday, September 26th, and Sunday morning, September 27th.
*
District Governor Ingrid Brown will visit the club on October 29th.
*
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Steve Padulsky collected $66.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: A new deck this week, thanks to Steve Padulsky's winning last week. Neither Steve Smith nor Gary picked the Three of Diamonds nor the $50 Joker so neither won the $13.50!!!
*******************************
Reminders:
************************
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Mel thanks Dick Berg, once again, for his generous contributions.
*************************
NEXT MEETINGS:
October 1: Temporarily Open
October 8: Robert Dionne, Atlantic Ambulance, Salem Rotarian
October 15: Mayor Bonfanti and the City Council
October 22: Jen Andersen--For Kids Only/Y-It-Matters
October 29: District Governor Ingrid Brown
Please make every effort to attend your Rotary meetings. The more members we have each week, the better we look to potential members--and to our visitors and speakers.
He had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%.
The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.”
The gentleman replied, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!”
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
LET'S BECOME A 100% SUSTAINING MEMBER CLUB!!
THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:
1. IS IT THE TRUTH? 2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED? 3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP? 4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?
It is an exciting time for The Rotary Foundation and Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. The Rotary Foundation is teaming up with world-renowned violinist and polio survivor Itzhak Perlman and the New York Philharmonic to present the Concert to End Polio, a benefit performance supporting the PolioPlus Fund.
It is an honor that Mr. Perlman and the New York Philharmonic are supporting Rotary in our effort to achieve a polio-free world. Their participation demonstrates the importance of this unprecedented global health initiative.
The Concert to End Polio will be at 7:30 p.m., 2 December 2009, in Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York City.
Concert tickets are $70-$200 and are currently on sale. A private reception with Perlman will follow the concert. A premium concert seat and admission to the reception is offered at a package price of $500. All proceeds will benefit Rotary's $200 Million Challenge.
A block of tickets have been reserved for Rotarians until 1 November. To order your tickets for the concert and post-concert reception, call the Philharmonic box office at 212-875-5656 and mention that you are a Rotarian.
I ask that you promote this benefit concert at all Rotary events you attend this fall. In addition, it would be great if you could promote this concert on your club web page. We have created a web banner ad and a concert ad that are both available at www.rotary.org/endpolioconcert for your use.
This concert will bring us one step closer to fulfilling our promise to eradicate polio and improve the future for the children of the world because The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands.
I hope you will join me at Lincoln Center where we will Celebrate Rotary and enjoy an evening of great music.
Sincerely,
Glenn E. Estess, Sr.
Chairman
The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International
