Citizens For Adequate Housing:
Thursday, November 5, 2009
Team Assignments: CATHY GRAVEL (Meal Pickup), FRED DENAPOLI (Salad and Cookies)
Arrive by at 42 Washington St., Peabody.
If you're unable to attend on the specified date, it's your responsibility to locate a replacement. Please inform the meal pickup person of the change and the replacement of your assigned responsibility. Thanks. Look at NEWS and Citizens For Adequate Housing Schedule for the future schedule and specific responsibilities.
President Cathy reminded everyone that the Pennies for Polio program is underway.. We've collected $74.50 so far. She told us that the final numbers are pretty close to being ready for the Golf Tournament, but it appears our 1/3 share will be about $5,700!! She reminded us that there will be no breakfast meeting on Thursday, November 12th. But everyone is expected to attend the Cash For Gold event that evening (5:30 to 7:30) at the Marriott. She reminded herself and asked guest Rachel Williams to remind her husband Fred deNapoli that they are next week's volunteers at Citizens For Adequate Housing.
President Cathy mentioned that we had received thank you notes from Citizens For Adequate Housing for our ad--they also sent a ticket for their dinner on December 4th--Does anyone want to go?; Peabody Public Schools for supporting Red Ribbon Week; and from the Progeria Research Foundation for our sponsorship--and they have another event on November 14th. Bob Wood expressed his thanks for our club's donation to the Rachel Carson Organization in his father's memory.
Martha said that the plans for the S.T.O.P. program are moving along. It will go from January through June at the Carroll School. She said that there's a page connected to the Library's website with a list of books about bullying. She also asked for volunteers to participate in the guest reader program.
President Cathy introduced Assistant District Governor Helene Andersen Michel who introduced District Governor Steve May who introduced District Governor Ingrid Brown. (Whew!) They recognized the fact that we have so many members (Peggy Pedro, Fred deNapoli, Grace Martins, Bob Wood) involved in the District level despite the small size of our membership.
DG Ingrid awarded PP-E Steve a certificate recognizing our club's contributions to Polio Plus. She then presented President Cathy with this year's Rotary Banner. DG Ingrid told the club that the search is now on for the 2012-2013 District Leadership. She mentioned that RI President John Kenny has said that it's up to the clubs to keep Rotary strong. He'd like each club to end the year (June 30, 2010) with more members than it had at the beginning of the year. But we need quality members, not just numbers. And it's up to us to be mentors for new members--get them involved immediately! RI President John Kenny's focus this year is on Water, Health and Hunger and Literacy. DG Ingrid reminded us that 50% of what is given by the district to the Foundation is returned to the district three years later for grants and other uses. Our club has benefitted from this a couple of times, including out S.T.O.P. grant. RI has designated our district as one of 100 districts worldwide as a Future Vision District. We'll focus on six areas: Peace and Conflict resolution; Disease prevention; Clean Water; Maternal and child health; Literacy; and Economic Development. RI is working toward the $200 Million challenge. If every Rotarian gave $34 a year for three years, we'd easily reach theat goal! It was recently reported that there was a week in which NO NEW CASES of polio haad been reported. DG Ingrid recommended that we have a meeting with the city's "movers and shakers". We told her that we had done just that a couple of weeks ago! The District Conference will be a Family-friendly event a the Samoset resort in Rockport/Camden, Maine, May 21-23, 2010. As usual, there'll be House of Friendship, where we can display what we've accomplished and where we can steal ideas from other clubs. DG Ingrid ended with: "Work Hard, Have Fun, Never Give Up, Expect a Miracle."
President Cathy presented Rachel Williams with a $1,000 check for her club's literacy program in Pakistan.
At the Board Meeting that followed, DG Ingrid complimented President Cathy as one of only a few club Presidents who submitted her planning guide on time. Our membership has decreased since 2005. On July 1st, we had 26 members, so our goal for June 30th is 27 members. We now have 23 members. Steve Smith said that at the District Membership/Foundation Seminar he heard some great ideas from the Woburn Club President for membership and meetings. ADG Helene strongly recommended that everyone wear their Rotary Pins all the time as a means of conversation about Rotary and possible foot in the door for getting new members. DG Ingrid said that our Foundation goal is $3,500 this year. Last year we had the same goal, but gave $4,425. Our all-time giving is $75,602.90. We're still wondering who gave the 90 cents. She further strongly recommended that our members--new and on the leadership track--attend the Rotary Leadership Institute. It should be paid for by the club. The Annual World Understanding and Peace Dinner will be on February 9, 2010 at the Danversport Yacht Club.
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Steve Padulsky collected $71.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither ADG Helene nor President Cathy picked the Queen of Hearts so no-one won the $71.00!!!
*******************************
Reminders:
We'll have our Gold jewelry selling party on Thursday, November 12th, at 5:30PM. It will be open to the public and there may be a $5 cover charge with a cash bar. There will not be a meeting that morning--this will take its place.
************************
Mel reminds us to keep selling the Entertainment Books. He asks that you bring the sales money each week to the meeting.
************************
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Mel thanks President Cathy for her generous contributions.

NEXT MEETINGS:
November 5: Dave Welbourn--Essex County Community Foundation
November 12: 5:30PM Gold Sale No morning meeting
November 26: THANKSGIVING--No Meeting
Please make every effort to attend your Rotary meetings. The more members we have each week, the better we look to potential members--and to our visitors and speakers.
Thank you!
UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES:
February 9, 2010: World Understanding and Peace Dinner
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
It is an exciting time for The Rotary Foundation and Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. The Rotary Foundation is teaming up with world-renowned violinist and polio survivor Itzhak Perlman and the New York Philharmonic to present the Concert to End Polio, a benefit performance supporting the PolioPlus Fund.
It is an honor that Mr. Perlman and the New York Philharmonic are supporting Rotary in our effort to achieve a polio-free world. Their participation demonstrates the importance of this unprecedented global health initiative.
The Concert to End Polio will be at 7:30 p.m., 2 December 2009, in Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, New York City.
Concert tickets are $70-$200 and are currently on sale. A private reception with Perlman will follow the concert. A premium concert seat and admission to the reception is offered at a package price of $500. All proceeds will benefit Rotary's $200 Million Challenge.
A block of tickets have been reserved for Rotarians until 1 November. To order your tickets for the concert and post-concert reception, call the Philharmonic box office at 212-875-5656 and mention that you are a Rotarian.
I ask that you promote this benefit concert at all Rotary events you attend this fall. In addition, it would be great if you could promote this concert on your club web page. We have created a web banner ad and a concert ad that are both available at www.rotary.org/endpolioconcert for your use.
This concert will bring us one step closer to fulfilling our promise to eradicate polio and improve the future for the children of the world because The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands.
I hope you will join me at Lincoln Center where we will Celebrate Rotary and enjoy an evening of great music.
Sincerely,
Glenn E. Estess, Sr.
Chairman
The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International
