Today's Breakfast: Same as last week and the week before and the week before and the week before and the week before and the week before.
President Steve reported that the Golf Tournament netted the club around $4,000. Our October 30th meeting will be a THANK YOU meeting to all who helped--golfers, sponsors, advertisers, etc. President Steve mentioned that the next fundraiser will be our major one--Taste of The North Shore on March 24th, 2009. The tickets are in and will be distributed shortly. It's not too early to start promoting our largest fundraiser every year. In the coming months we'll all be visiting family and friends--into November and December for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Channukah. Push sales of the raffle tickets as gifts. We'll have periodic committee meetings. A reminder: Every member of Peabody Rotary is a member of the Taste Committee.
President Steve told the club that we can apply for a District Simplified Grant of up to $5,000. The deadline for applying is soon. President Steve would like to do a project that addresses children and child mortality. Perhaps bike helmets and training to go along with the opening of the new bike path. It was suggested that we get the community involved and get plenty of publicity.
President Steve reminded us that District Governor Tom Elliott will be making his club visit on October 16th. At that meeting, we'll be installing our newest members. And after the meeting there'll be a Board meeting with DG Tom.
President Steve announced that the Board has approved the following: Members who miss meetings and do not make-up will receive up to 4 credits of $10 for missed meetings per quarter. But members are urged to make up missed meetings at other clubs--partially to "steal" ideas to help our club. President Steve mentioned upcoming meetings. The list is below. He also mentioned that this year, we're giving $1,000 to Citizens For Adequate Housing.
D-7930's 2009-10 Ambassadorial Scholars, Ngozi Kamalu and Alissa Bilfield
Tom Rowen told about the fantastic experience at NorthEast Link the past weekend. He was particularly struck by the Ambassadorial Scholars who were at tables surrounded by Ambassadorial Scholar Alumni and Rotarians as well as the collection of flags from around the world that were hanging from the ceiling. Herb Harris added that Brent Drage, RI Foundation representative from Evanston, was very complimentary. He said that he's attended many of these training sessions for Ambassadorial Scholars around the country, and NorthEast Link was the best.
Steve Smith had circulated lists from the Chamber of Commerce for us to review and choose names to contact to invite to a meeting--as potential members. Have you let Steve know whom you'll invite? He'll follow up with you.
Mel Babner reminded everyone to sell the Entertainment books. Sales are way down from last year! He also mentioned that when he went to North Shore Bank to pick up a couple of bags of bottles and cans, they were no where to be found--perhaps because of the rat sightings. But Peggy was able to find them (the bags, not the rats) and will have them for Mel. Thanks North Shore Bank!! What about the other members' businesses?
Joanne Donovan will be taking part in The Walk For Autism, in honor of her nephew. The walk takes place at Suffolk Downs on October 19th. Please let Joanne know if you'd like to sponsor her. Treasurer Loring Merrow can bill you, if you prefer.
Fred deNapoli and Grace Martins are on the District selection committee for the Outbound GSE team to South Africa. The team will be going to Johannesburg at the end of February, returning at the end of March. If you'd like to be considered as the team leader--as Grace was a few months ago--contact Fred or Grace. And if you know any non-Rotarian between the ages of 20 and 45 who might be interested in going, lead them to Fred and Grace.
Answer (a): A bootleg still.
Mel Babner reminded everyone to sell the Entertainment Books. He thanked Fred deNapoli and Chuck Holden for taking 10 and 5 books, respectively. And he thanks Cathy Gravel for selling 10 books!!

*
Happy Dollars: Acting Sergeant-at-arms Herb Harris collected $55.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
*
50-50 Raffle: The pool was $103. Neither Peggy Pedro nor Mel Babner picked the KING OF CLUBS or the $50 Joker.

It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
LET'S BECOME A 100% SUSTAINING MEMBER CLUB!!
Answer (b): Blue Ridge Mountains, Virgina.
" Let us keep our hearts strong, enthusiasm fresh, hope high. As long as we keep imbued with this spirit, Rotary can never die."
The Rotarian, August 1926
THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:
1. IS IT THE TRUTH? 2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED? 3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP? 4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?
A man follows a woman out of a movie theatre. She has a dog on a leash.
He stops her and says, "I'm sorry to bother you, but I couldn't help but notice that your dog was really into the movie. He cried at the right spots, he moved nervously in his seat at the boring parts, but most of all, he laughed like crazy at the funny parts. Did you find that unusual??"
"Yes," she replied, "I found it very unusual ... because he hated the book!"
