President Steve reminded everyone to continue to sell the Entertainment Books--you'll be getting together with family on Thanksgiving--great opportunity to sell--or give--these books. (And to sell Taste Raffle tickets.) He, Dr. Mike (and son Max) and Mel served 33-34 people at Haven From Hunger and ran out of food. We'll continue to monitor the situation to decide whether to increase the amount of food purchased from Fatima's. A group of Girls Scouts helped.
*****************************
President Steve emphasized that every member has to sign up for at least one of the Taste Committees. All members are technically members of every committee, but you need to sign onto committees for logistics' purposes. Send an e-mail to President Steve -- you should reply to his recent e-mail.
*****************************
President Steve mentioned that he still has a couple of tickets for the Citizens For Adequate Housing fundraiser being held on Friday night (the night you receive this newsletter). Call him if you're interested.
*****************************
Nichole talked again about the children's clothing drive she and Grace are doing for the kids of her family's hometown in Mexico. She'd also like to collect toys for them. Drop them off on Saturday at Grace's house at 76 Washington Street.

The next Board meeting will be on Monday, December 1st, 5:00PM, at GraVoc Associates.

President Steve introduced our guest speaker, Peabody Police Chief Robert Champagne who told us that the Police Department is there for both prevention of crime as well as enforcing the law--all to keep our community safe. He spoke about the effect of the economy on Peabody--the slowdown causes layoffs which increase alcoholic consumption and drug use. More money is needed to support these habits, so more crime to obtain that money. This area has a larger heroin problem than New York City, thus more thefts. Also, many people are abandoning their homes--these are targets for theft, identity theft as well as squatters. Chief Champagne was highly complimentary of the Peabody School Department saying that it's way ahead in partnering with teachers and parents concerning the drug problems. "It's OK to say 'No'." Finally, Chief Champagne spoke about Question 2, the decriminalization of marijuana. Because government agencies (such as the Police Department) cannot spend any money on advertising, the "No" side was widely outspent.

Mel Babner reminds everyone to sell the Entertainment Books. Sales are way down from last year! But he thanks Rudy and Cathy (again!!) for selling a number of books.
*****************************
President Steve reminded the club that in order to have a successful Taste of the North Shore, it will take a lot of work by all members of Peabody Rotary. With 100% approval to go forward, he announced that we will go on with the Taste. The following subcommittees (and chairs) were named: Ticket Sales and records (Mike Tallo); Restaurants (Cathy Gravel)--7 have already signed up; Ad Book (Peggy Pedro); Auctions/Raffles (Scott Bronstein); Publicity (Steve Smith). Contact the committee chair on whose committee you want to work. But a reminder--we're all members of every committee. But choose one on which you'll work a bit harder. Mel has already sold some raffle tickets!!
Reminders:
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Mel Thanks Mike Tallo for his generous contributions.
******************************
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.
******************************
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Jeff Doherty collected $71.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: The pool was $181. Neither Gayle Cavanaugh nor Loring Merrow picked the KING OF CLUBS or the $50 Joker.
*******************************

The Rotarian, August 1926
THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:
1. IS IT THE TRUTH? 2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED? 3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP? 4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?
A man is sitting in a bar when a beautiful woman walks up and whispers in his ear, "I'll do anything you want for 50 bucks."
He puts his drink down and starts going through his pockets. He pulls out a ten, two five's, a twenty and ten ones. He thrusts the wadded up money into the woman's hand and says, "Here...paint my house."
