Peggy reported on her wonderful experience at the World Peace and Understanding dinner the past Friday.  Also in attendance from the Peabody Rotary club were Nichole Nelsen, Steve Smith and Margie, Cathy Gravel and President Grace.  2008-9 Ambassadorial Scholar Julia Kwolyk entertained the group playing fiddle.  She also has a superb voice!  A total of $7,000 in change was collected from the clubs in the district.  The district will match that amount and RI will match the $14,000, if I understand correctly.

*

Fred deNapoli told us that the movie made by Malali Joya, from Afghanastan, won Best Documentary at both Cannes and Sundance.  She's in town and staying with Fred and Rachel.  She had planned to visit Haven From Hunger on Friday.  The movie was shown in Boston on March 6th.

*

Cathy Gravel told us that the scholarship applications have been sent to the schools.  Please contact Cathy if you'd like to help on the committee.

Mike Eidelman spoke to the children at Y-It-Matters on Wednesday, February 27th.  He enjoyed the experience and said that it was easy and it was a great group of kids.

*

Mel Babner thanks Dick Berg for donating the cans and bottles.  He seems to be the only one donating.  What do you do with your empties?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (booth beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.  Every nickel helps!!

TASTE OF THE NORTH SHORE UPDATE

Tom Rowen said that as of now (2/26), we're ahead of last year.  But by the time you read this, the Taste is only a couple of days away!!  So keep on selling raffle and entrance tickets!!  Bring your tickets and money to the meeting on March 11th.

Thanks, again, Fred deNapoli, for your generous sponsorship of the Taste.

LEFTOVER FROM LAST WEEK'S RIPPLE:

Scott Bronstein donated a laptop computer for  the auction!

Deanne Healey can create a gift certificate for you--just give her the details.

The following have made raffle and/or gift basket donations:  Santoro's, Serenity, Mary Kay, Kappy's, Metro CU, Borders Cafe, Salem Waterfront Hotel (Weekend for 2), Boston Red Sox--Jonathan Lester's signed item.  I may have missed a few items, as they were rattled off rather quickly.

Hopefully, you need more tickets to sell--call Steve Morad for more.

(Most of the following has remained from previous issues and is still germane now and bears repeating.)

Tom Rowen gave an update on the Taste of The North Shore.  There will be twenty one tables.  Do we need to remind everyone to SELL, SELL, SELL the raffle tickets and the entrance tickets?  Each member is also asked to obtain two gift certificates to be used as raffle prizes at the Taste.  Once you sell any tickets, turn in the stubs and money to Treasurer Loring.  This is our largest fundraiser of the year.  The more we raise, the more we can help the Peabody community and the more Rotary's name will be out there.  And the more Rotary's name is out there, the more interest there'll be from prospective members.  The more members we have, the more people we'll have to help with our fundraisers.  The more help we have, the greater the number of gift certificates we can receive and the more attendees at our events.  Which will result in raising more money, . . .    Sponsorships are:  Diamond ($1,500) with lots of perks; Corporate ($250) with less perks, but still a good amount; and Patron ($75), which includes a ticket to the Taste and a 2-line message in the program.  The $250 Corporate Sponsor level is aimed at small businesses who might not otherwise buy a sponsorship.  Speak to business owners about being sponsors!  At the 2/26 meeting, the following prices for sponsorships were listed:  $1,500, $750, $250, $150, $75 and a $50 ad in the adbook.

Fred deNapoli (Winslow, Evans & Crocker) has committed to be a Silver Sponsor!!!  Thanks for your generosity, Fred!!

Scott's in the process of obtaining Sports Memorabilia for the auctions--all on consignment, so no risk of loss.  On 3/11, we'll need 5 rolls of raffle tickets.  Cathy Gravel and Nichole Nelsen will be putting the baskets together for raffle prizes.  Please help them fill the baskets by obtaining donations and/or gift certificates (minimum: two per member).  Steve Smith's done a great job spreading the word through the Fire and Police Departments and the Schools.  Through the mayor's office, all city employees will receive a flyer.  Steve Morad hopes you'll need more tickets--he has plenty!!  Just ask him for more.  Bring the tickets and flyers everywhere you go.  And post them at your offices--for the public to see, as well as your employees.

President Grace sent out an e-mail assigning all members to tasks.  Here's the list, copied and pasted from her e-mail:

Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind - John F. Kennedy

My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four.  Unless there are three other people - Orson Welles

*****************************************************

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.

The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, “Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.”

The other man said, “What is the name of the restaurant?”

The first man thought and thought and finally said, “What is the name of that flower you give someone you love? You know...The one that’s red and has thorns?”

“Do you mean a rose?” “Yes, that’s the one,” replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, “Rose, what is the name of that restaurant we went to last night?”
