President Martha asked that everyone turn in their badges so she can order new, female-friendly, badges. If you want to change your badge information, now's the time to tell President Martha. She wished almost mother and father Vanessa and David a Happy 4th Anniversary and Brian and Denise a Happy 39th Anniversary.
President Martha reminded us of the club's Installation Dinner which will be on June 23rd at the Holy Ghost Society on Howley Street In Peabody. Be sure to let her know your menu selection (chicken or fish). On Wednesday, June 8th, a group led by PE Steve P will visit Mayor Bonfanti to request city employee representation in our club.
We wish former member Jesse Philbrick well in his new position as Manager of the Macaroni Grill in Reading.
President Martha had spoken with Chamber of Commerce President Deanne Healey, who said that no golf tournament notices had been sent out. But it apparently had slipped into the Chamber newsletter in error.
Peggy P reported that she and Bob W attended a District meeting and accepted the Presidential Citation for our club, which she presented to President Martha.
Peggy L said that there were 5 or 6 definite choices for winners of our $1,000 scholarships. There were 3 others on the bubble. The Board stayed after the meeting to vote on the number of scholarships to award.
(Ed.'s note: Sorry about the poor picture quality--the flash didn't work properly.)
Grace introduced our speaker Francis Lavally, who is the current President of the Bo, Sierra Leone, Rotary Club. He also served as the club's first President in 1988. He's in financial management and accounting, a founder of the Sierra Leone teachers Union Savings & Credit Cooperative Society, a union consultant, co-founder of MAPCO, which he now directs, and many other accolades. He has a very lengthy resume, too long to list here. But quite an accomplished individual. Unfortunately, his Power Point presentation was not compatible with Grace's computer. But he did show many pictures to go along with his presentation. One project his club is working on is a children's hospital in Bo, which would be the second children's hospital in the entire country. His club has worked on many projects with the help of clubs in Australia and Great Britain as well as Rotary International matching grants. Other projects include rapid intervention to assist those displaced by the civil war in the country, mobility project for wheelchairs, water project, installing wells. There are currently 25 members in the Bo Rotary club, but only four original members. The civil war there disrupted the club for about ten years. Considering the poverty in Sierra Leone--it's one of the poorest countries in the world--and the civil war there, the Bo Rotary club has certainly accomplished a lot!

Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Bob C, collected $36.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
*********************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither Loring nor Mel picked the Queen of Spades. So no-one won the $98.
*********************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.
**********************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
**********************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! Mel thanks former member Dick Berg for his generous donation of cans and bottles.
