This special Installation Dinner was at Carrabba's, thanks to Rotarian Jesse. A great menu, wonderful service and just an excellent evening. After the Pledge of Allegiance and a superb rendition of God Bless America by Katrina Gravel, with flag holding by Dave Gravel, (do we see a family theme here?), President Cathy began the evening's festivities by announcing the members with perfect attendance. They are:
Bob Wood 1 year
Cathy Gravel 4 years
Fred deNapoli 4 years
Grace Martins 5 years
Loring Merrow 5 years
Peggy Pedro 8 years
Herb Harris 11 years
Mel Babner 39 years ! !
President Cathy made a special Paul Harris Fellowship presentation to Vanessa Silveira who worked on every project the club had in a leadership role, as well as subbed as the Editor of The Ripple, with complete enthusiasm and follow-through with everything she did. A true Paul Harris Fellow!!
President Cathy then thanked long-serving Treasurer Loring and Secretary Gary for their absolute support and assistance throughout her year as President. And she made a separate Thank You presentation to Peggy, who will become our District Secretary on July 1st.
Peggy then presented Gary with a Paul Harris Fellowship. Gary is a member of the Circle of Gold (3 or 4 times, now). He and three other members donate $250 per year for 4 years for a total of $1,000--the amount of contribution that warrants a Paul Harris Fellowship. One of the four donors is chosen each year to receive the PHF.
President Cathy thanked the club and spoke of the club's many accomplishments during the past year which were recognized at the District Conference when she was awarded the Presidential Citation as well as a Certificate of Accomplishment For Literacy. Mentioning that this year's Rotary theme, The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands", focused on health, hunger, water and literacy, and her goal a year ago was to engage the club was to enhance the community with service projects, she felt we had met those challenges. She then listed a number of the projects and programs we accomplished: crafts for the library's free lunch program, International Festival pie sales, golf tournament, joint session with the Mayor and City Council kicking off the drug-awareness program and the $1,000 collection for polio, donations for Grace's (and our) special soldier serving in Iraq, implementation of the S.T.O.P. program, servicing 15 at-risk students in an afterschool program, Nicaragua project, $2,000 Haiti earthquake relief, Paul Harris Fellowships in honor of Literacy Month to Martha Holden and Susan Smoller and a $1,000 donation to Rachel Williams's International Literacy project, meals at Citizens For Adequate Housing, High School Scholarships, and many guest speakers adn local donations. Additionally, we welcomed many new members. She concluded by saying that she is proud of all we accomplished and looks forward to Building Communities and Bridging Continents under the leadership of our new President Martha Holden.
President Cathy then handed out Service Above Self Awards to all--because none of the club's accomplishments would have been attained without everyone's help.
PE Martha presented President Cathy with a gift to thank her for a great year of leadership. PE Martha then announced the 2010-2011 Board of Directors:
President: Martha Holden
President-Elect: Vanessa Siveira
Vice President: Steve Padulsky
Secretary: Gary Epstein
Treasurer: Loring Merrow
Sergeant at Arms: Bob Clattenburg
Past President: Cathy Gravel
Board Members:
Peggy Lyons
Peggy Pedro
Herb Harris
Grace Martins
John Meakin
In her remarks, PE Martha said that she thanks the board for agreeing to serve and for their assistance next year. She would like to see the club pursue literacy initiatives on a local and global level next year.
Grace then said grace and the delicious dinner was served. During dinner, President Cathy made a special Thank You to Jesse for arranging and preparing (or having his staff prepare) such a great meal for this special occasion.
Fred made a toast honoring President Cathy's accomplishments with much gratitude.
NEXT MEETINGS:
June 17: Amy Tetrault, GSE Update from London
June 24: Iris Weaver, Spiritual Herbalist
Please make every effort to attend your Rotary meetings. The more members we have each week, the better we look to potential members--and to our visitors and speakers.
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
