Today's visiting Rotarians:

Guests

****************************************

President Cathy wished Peggy Pedro a Happy Birthday and Jeff & Christine Doherty a Happy Anniversary #16.  She mentioned that Steve Smith had given her information on a possible comedy night fundraiser.  With everything else we're doing right now, that idea will be put on hold until later in the Rotary year.

President Cathy thanked Cathleen and Joanne for working with her and Martha at the library on Tuesday.  They helped the kids make picture frames.  From the pictures that were passed around, it appears that the kids really enjoyed themselves and were proud of their art work.  Even the teenagers, who usually don't participate in the crafts, made a frame for one of the adults there.

 *

Literacy Chair Martha Holden metwith Phil Sheridan of the Peabody School Department to talk about the S.T.O.P. program.  The Second Step program is an anti-violence program so, although related, it and S.T.O.P. do not clash. Phil will get back to Martha with the appropriate scheel to work with.  Once she hears from him, she'll apply for a Simplified District Grant.

*

President Cathy learned from Citizens for Adequate Housing that many families are not around on Fridays.  She was asked if we could do thursdays, instead.  The overwhelming consensus at today's meeting was that Thursdays are fine--even better than Fridays.  She also learned that we'll only need three volunteers each month.  And there aren't as many individuals to be fed, so the amount of food will remain the same as with Haven From Hunger.  That may be adjusted once we get a good feel for their needs.  Herb noted that the schedule WILL CHANGE.  August is OK--except Martha will sub for Cathleen.  All members are asked to e-mail Herb (h_harris@smallbizpros.com) if any of the first Thursdays of each month is a problem.

*

Peggy Pedro passed a sheet around for all members to agree to get a couple of raffle prizes.  There were several restaurants from which to choose.  And members may pick up other raffle prizes as well.

*

President Cathy  sadly announced Julie Erickson's resignation from membership.  Julie is now in the job market, so if anyone can help her, it would be appreciated.

*

Vanessa Silveira gave her classification speech today.  She is the Branch Manager of Metro Credit Union, on Main Street in Peabody.  She replaced former Rotarian Nichole Nelsen, who had moved to Texas, both at the Credit Union and as a Rotarian in May of this year. Vanessa has worked for Metro Credit Union for 3 years.  She started in the main office in Chelsea, transferred to the Lynn Branch when it opened in October 2007, then went back to the Chelsea branch in February 2008.

Vanessa graduated from UMass Dartmouth in 2006 with a degree in Business Management.  Her previous jobs were in theatre and hospitality and include an internship at Disney World, and the Charles Playhouse for Blue Man Group.

Vanessa grew up in Salem and currently lives in Peabody.  Her husband David, is a chef and has worked at Top of the Hub in Boston, and the Boston Harbor Hotel; he is currently the Sous Chef at Capt's Waterfront Grill in Pickering Wharf in downtown Salem.

Vanessa says she is glad to be back in the North Shore and is looking forward to working with Rotary on local initiative and projects.  She has already volunteered to work on our website, including The Ripple, and is co-chairing the Taste of the North Shore.

President Cathy reminds everyone to give Mel empty cans and bottles.  She's considering awarding a prize to the one who makes the most contributions.  Mel will also again be handling the Entertainment books, beginning next month--get those pre-orders ready!!  Still only $25!!!!!!!!!!

District Governor Ingrid Brown will visit the club on October 29th.

*

Reminders:

**********************************************

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of

  interest to the club.

        **********************************************

Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements.  Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up.  However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up.  Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings.  Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!

  *

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.   Every nickel helps!!  Mel thanks Jeff Doherty for their generous contributions.

 ******************************

Happy Dollars:  Sergeant-at-arms Steve Padulsky collected $55

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

    ******************************

50-50 Raffle: Neither Herb nor Herb picked the Ace of Diamonds, so neither won the $223.

Grandpa was driving with his 9-year-old granddaughter and beeped the horn by mistake. She turned and looked at him for an explanation.

He said, "I did that by accident."

She replied, "I know that, Grandpa."

He replied, "How did you know?" She said, "Because you didn't say "idiot!" afterwards

It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member.  It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter.  That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.

LET'S BECOME A 100% SUSTAINING MEMBER CLUB!!

THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do:

1. IS IT THE TRUTH?   2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?   3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP?   4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?

Please keep this in mind!
