President Martha (how's that sound Past President Cathy?) welcomed back Ann Spak-Danjou. President Martha read a letter that accompanied the $2,500 check for our simplified district grant for the S.T.O.P. program. She wished Happy Anniversary to Bob and Melissa Clattenburg and Mel and Ethel Babner (51 YEARS!!!). Also Birthday greetings to Don Lyons. She then asked for committee reports. Membership: Steve Smith just asked us all to try to come up with potential new members. PP Cathy may have a new member proposal soon. Foundation: Peggy P said that we had reached our Foundation goal under PP Cathy. Publicity: Herb said that he expects that there'll be some pictures in the local papers soon. President Martha gave him the name of the Boston Globe North Online editor to contact. Golf: In Bob Clattenburg's absence, President Martha said that we had paid our portion of the fee for the September 20th golf tournament. International Festival: Peggy L said we'll probably do the pies again. President Martha said that we had registered and paid out fee. She also said that the City would like to see it be a "green" festival, so perhaps we can use biodegradable plates, etc. This discussion prompted Steve Padulsky to suggest that we sell pies made of green apples. Program: In Grace's absence, President Martha said that we have no speakers scheduled. (Ed.'s note: Upon further review, Grace did schedule speakers on July 22nd and 29th--see below.) President Martha mentioned about the Peabody Cultural Collaborative's initiative to do something at 55 Foster Street, where the Northeast ARC has its shop. She strongly urged everyone to complete the brief survey at http://peabodyculturalcollaborative.org.
PP Cathy said that with the Peabody Education Council, we will be jointly producing a school-year "Now 'n' then" calendar with historic and current pictures. There's an opportunity for businesses to advertise each month--$500 as a month's sponsor, and $125 and $250 ads as well. And there will be weekly as well as monthly raffle drawings. Rotary events will be listed throughout the calendar.
Mel announced that the 2011 Entertainment Books will be available in August. He has a supply of 2010 books, which are good through October. Those will be given FREE to those purchasing the 2011 books ($30.00 each) until supplies run out.
We then discussed the 4 Avenues of Rotary Service, but there was a bit of confusion as to exactly what these are. President Martha assigned Chairs to each Avenue, but some of the assignments weren't Avenues. Here's the Avenue Chair list so far: Club: Gary; International: Grace; Vocational: Steve P.; Community: ??
******************************
Happy Dollars: New Sergeant-at-arms Bob Clattenburg missed his first official meeting as S-a-a. So Acting Sergeant-at-arms Steve Padulsky collected $55.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
******************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither Steve S nor Brian picked the Seven of Hearts so no-one won the $32.00. And neither picked the $50 Joker.
*******************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, asks that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of
interest to the club.
*************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
*************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!! He thanks former member and President Dick Berg and the North Shore Bank for their generous contributions.

NEXT MEETINGS:
July 8, 2010:
July 15, 2010:
July 22, 2010: Bruce Wood, Internet Marketing
July 29, 2010: Danyela Schanton,Bilingual Instructor
Please make every effort to attend your Rotary meetings. The more members we have each week, the better we look to potential members--and to our visitors and speakers.
Thank you!
UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES:
July 19, 2010: Board Meeting at Peabody Institute Library
The Fourth of July weekend was approaching, and Miss Pelham, the nursery school teacher, took the opportunity to tell her class about patriotism. 'We live in a great country,' she announced. 'One of the things we should be happy is that, in this country, we are all free.'
Trevor, who was a little boy in her class, came walking up to her from the back of the room. He stood with his hands on his hips and said loudly, 'I'm not free. I'm four.'
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
