Meeting notes

Today's visiting Rotarians: None

Guests:  None

************************

Today's Breakfast: Because of a strong protest from one of our members, who will remain nameless, this will no longer be a feature.  Perhaps if we should ever be served anything different, it may be noted.

   *****************************

President Steve mentioned that Haven From Hunger was closed when our members brought the food on January 2nd.  The food had to be thrown away.  He spoke with Trudy and told her that any first Friday that they're closed we have to be notified in advance.

*****************************

The World Peace and Understanding Dinner will be on February 5th.  So far, six Peabody Rotarians will be going.  Let President Steve know if you'll be attending.

***********************************

Peabody Rotary will be hosting the Peabody Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours on Wednesday, February 11th, from 5:00 to 7:00PM, at the Marriott.  Let's have a great showing there!  As a matter of fact, in anticipation of most of our members attending this event, we will have NO MEETING the next morning, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH.

*****************************

Grace mentioned that Martin, the Colombian exchange student, is still at  Cathy's. To give the Gravel family a break, please consider hosting Martin for a weekend.  Talk with Cathy to get details.

*****************************

President Steve said that it's time to really get going with the Taste of the North Shore--sell tickets; get restaurants (7 or 8 so far); talk it up!  There was talk about putting together an ad book--sell ads!!  Steve Smith is looking to get some publicity--perhaps a feature on some aspect of the Taste.  It was suggested that in the past we featured the previous year's winner.  Last year's winner was Outback Steakhouse.

*******************************

Cathy is looking for a Scholarship Committee--Chair and members.  Word needs to be sent to the schools and applications to be reviewed with decisions to be made.  Tell Cathy of your interest.

******************************

Our feature speaker this week was our very own  Steve Smith who gave us a presentation on his and Margie's September trip to Italy.  We saw great pictures of Naples, Pompeii, Capri, Sorrento, Positano and Maritaya (?).  For Steve, the highlight was Pompeii.  He marvelled at the architecture and construction in place over two thousand years ago!

***********************************

From Past Editions:

President Steve emphasized that every member has to sign up for at least one of the Taste Committees.  All members are technically members of every committee, but you need to sign onto committees for logistics' purposes.  Send an e-mail to President Steve -- you should reply to his recent e-mail.

  *****************************

President Steve reminded the club that in order to have a successful Taste of the North Shore, it will take a lot of work by all members of Peabody Rotary.  With 100% approval to go forward, he announced that we will go on with the Taste.  The following subcommittees (and chairs) were named:  Ticket Sales and records (Mike Tallo); Restaurants (Cathy Gravel)--7 have already signed up; Ad Book (Peggy Pedro); Auctions/Raffles (Scott Bronstein); Entertainment (Julie Erickson); Publicity (Steve Smith).  Contact the committee chair on whose committee you want to work.  But a reminder--we're all members of every committee.  But choose one on which you'll work a bit harder.  Mel has already sold some raffle tickets!!  How many have you sold?

President Steve emphasized that our meetings begin PROMPTLY at 7:30.  (Almost) Everyone voted to meet at this time, so there's no excuse to be late.

Reminders:

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans?  (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.)  Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel.  Every nickel helps!!  Mel Thanks Dick Berg and North Shore Bank for their generous contributions.

******************************

Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.

 ******************************

Happy Dollars:  This month's Sergeant-at-arms Steve Smith collected $66.

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club.  We can use the money!!  But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

    ******************************

50-50 Raffle: The pool was $11.50 (WOW!!!).  Neither Grace nor Jeff picked the SEVEN OF HEARTS (?) or the $50 Joker.

    *******************************

Little Billy wanted $100 badly and prayed for two weeks but nothing happened.  Then he decided to write God a letter requesting the $100.

When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to God, USA, they decided to send it to the President.  The President was so impressed, touched, and amused that he instructed his secretary to send Billy a $5.00 bill. The President thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.

Billy was delighted with the $5.00 and sat down to write a thank you note to God, which read:

Dear God, Thank you very much for sending the money, however, I noticed that for some reason you had to send it through Washington D.C. and, as usual, those crooks deducted $95.00.  Thanks, Billy
