Today's visiting Rotarians: None (ed.'s note--I won't make a sarcastic remark about the couple of long-lost members who were at today's meeting. After all, I'll be missing twelve meetings in a row--but making up all of them--after next week's meeting.)
Guests: None

President Steve reminded us that tonight, at 5:00, there will be a taping at Peabody Cable Access TV of the first Rotary show, which will air on Comcast Channel 10 periodically. He will interview Peggy P, who will talk about the Foundation, Polio and the Polio Plunge. Other members are welcome to attend--either to be interviewed on the show or to observe.
On Friday morning, President Steve will lead a large delegation of members at a meeting with Mayor Ted Bettencourt. The main goal is to talk about how membership in Peabody Rotary by a city employee would benefit the city.
President Steve suggested that members who will be displaying at the Chamber of Commerce Business Expo also include flyers for The Taste of the North Shore on their tables.
Be sure to tell President Steve if you'll attend the World Peace Dinner on February 8th. The club has reserved a table of 8.
President Steve wished Bob and Susan Wood a Happy 40th Anniversary!!
He then mentioned that he'll be meeting with the owners of Raice's, a Caribbean restaurant in Peabody Square, to talk about supplying the food for Haven From Hunger.
Because there won't be a Board Meeting soon enough, President Steve asked for a vote to donate $350 to Peabody Babe Ruth League to sponsor a team again. Passed unanimously.
Vanessa began the discussion about the Taste by asking everyone to contact the restaurants they said they would contact. So far, the only commitments are from Raices, Santoro's, Perfecto's, Edible Arrangements and an ice cream vendor. If anyone has suggestions for the raffle table, be sure to forward them to Cathy or Vanessa. Cathy is awaiting a response from the High School Music Director on the availability of one of its groups. Jazz ensemble seems to be the leading candidate. Only Sue is on the Adbook/Sponsorship subcommittee. Vanessa asked for volunteers and Jessika stepped up. Herb reported that we're in this week's Peabody Patch. He's also sent press releases to the Salem News, Peabody Weekly, Coffee News, Peabody Chamber of Commerce and the Peabody Biz Monthly. The Chamber of Commerce has already included the Taste in a recent e-mail to all members and will include the press release in the next paper newsletter that goes out in February. Thanks to Jessika, Bob C, Vanessa, Peggy L and Megan, all of whom made many copies, the Chamber will insert them into that newsletter mailing. Herb suggested that everyone should make copies of the flyer (with their own contact info) and ask their local shops if they may be taped to the windows or elsewhere. If you pick up any gift cards, please get them to President Steve. There's lots to do, many more restaurants are needed, more sponsorships, ads, raffle items and ticket sales. And less than eight weeks to go!!

Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms John collected $54.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
*********************************
50-50 Raffle: Neither Jessika nor Jessika picked the Jack of Spades--So the $90 pot is safe for now. This is the second week in a row that Jessika's number was chosen twice and third in recent weeks that the same person's ticket has been pulled twice. Guess they have to be mixed a lot better.
********************************
Reminders:
Our speaker scheduler, Brian Cassidy, asks that you tell him of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.
**********************************
Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!
**********************************
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!!

When my printer's type began to grow faint, I called a local repair shop where a friendly man informed me that the printer probably needed only to be cleaned. Because the store charged $50 for such cleanings, he told me, I might be better off reading the printer's manual and trying the job myself.
Pleasantly surprised by his candor, I asked, "Does your boss know that you discourage business?"
"Actually it's my boss's idea," the employee replied sheepishly. "We usually make more money on repairs if we let people try to fix things themselves first."
It's easy to become a Rotary Sustaining member. It's $100 per year, but Loring can bill you $25 per quarter. That's $8.33 a month, or 28 CENTS a day, or a little over a penny an hour.
