President Steve mentioned that the hand-held camera training has been postponed until next week--either Monday or Friday at 5:00--at Peabody Community Access TV. Let him know if you want to be trained and on which day. He reported that we had done a taping last week which will be aired on Channel 10 at various times. President Steve, Peggy P and Herb are on the show, and the cameras and control room were operated by Cathy, Brian and Megan.

By a show of hands, it appears that Vanessa will have 6 supporters from the club as she dips into the Atlantic on February 11th. President Steve will rent a room for all to get warm.

President Steve reminded John M and Megan (in absentia) that they will be serving at Haven From Hunger on February 10th. The food will come from Santoro's. But President Steve has spoken with Raice's, who is willing to supply the food in March. He'll let Santoro's know that we'll be taking a break next month. He'll also check with Alyse to be sure that the Caribbean style food is OK at Haven.

President Steve is collecting gift cards, coupons and other items that might be included in the gift bags for the Taste. Start collecting--and asking for--donations.

And he wished Fred a Happy Birthday (yesterday).

Vanessa reported on her pre-PETS meeting she attended on Tuesday. She felt that it was a good introduction to what is coming--PETS weekend in March. A lot was discussed about the Foundation and our being a pilot district. Our club was one of only three clubs to file grant requests on time. There may be more grant funds available for another project.

Bob C said that the Meadow had contacted Deanne at the Chamber to see when we'd like our golf tournament. The feeling was to hold it in June, as there are too many conflicting tournaments in the fall. Bob will tell Deanne that the club unanimously approves the move to June. Peabody access TV will help with the publicity and, in return, will receive a portion of the profits. Because they're a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and neither our club nor the chamber is, we'll have a better chance of getting donations from the national golf product companies.

Brian introduced our speaker, Professor Greg Carroll, from Salem State University, a former Rotarian originally from Australia. He told us of the history of Liberia and his trip there with seven Salem State students last March, with many photos shown. As luck would have it, one of his students is from Liberia and her father is the Bishop of the country and was a great help--even putting everyone up. There had been much conflict in the country and women had been abused constantly. The women of Liberia protested and today, they boast of having the first woman president of a country in Africa, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who shared the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize with Leymah Gbowee. Professor Carroll told us about their fascinating stay in the country and how they helped. The goal is to collect data on training modules and attitudes toward peace and reconciliation. He'll be returning in March with more Salem State students and will bring a dozen XO laptop computers. Their goal is to foster peace and reconciliation through Liberian students' oral histories of their parents. They will also work on aquaculture development and nursing. He spoke of Charles Taylor, and the atrocities for which he was responsible. Taylor had been in Plymouth House of Correction, but escaped (with the help of the CIA?). Taylor would kidnap children and order them to kill their parents or they'd lose a limb or two. He also would lead raids into villages with his naked men, terrorizing the people and cutting off arms and legs. There's a movie about this that was shown at the Sundance Festival, "Redemption of General Butt Naked". The move will be presented at Salem State on Wednesday (same night as the district's World Peace Dinner) at 7:00PM at marsh Hall 210. (ed's note: There was much, much more to this presentation, but there's not enough time for me to write it all down here.)

*********************************

Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms John collected $53.

Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures (not Rotary related) of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.

*********************************

50-50 Raffle: Neither Brian nor President Steve picked the Jack of Spades--So the $104 pot is safe for now.

********************************

Reminders:

Our speaker scheduler, Brian Cassidy, asks that you tell him of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.

**********************************

Secretary Gary Epstein reminds members of Rotary's attendance requirements. Members cannot miss more than three consecutive meetings without making up. However, there are plenty of opportunities to make up. Attend a Board meeting (All members are encouraged to attend, anyway.), attend a committee meeting, work on the website, and the most basic make-up--attend other clubs' meetings. Be sure to steal ideas our club can use!!

**********************************

What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel. Every nickel helps!!
