A new feature requested by President Steve: Question of the week. The answer is in this newsletter. If you cannot answer the question at our meeting next week, or by e-mail if you don't attend next week, be prepared to pay the consequences. Grace Martins was asked to recite the 4-Way Test. She stumbled through it with a lot of help from Gary Epstein. She ended up paying a fine.

President Steve began the meeting by passing around a sign-up sheet for the District Membership/Foundation Conference to be held on Wednesday, September 17th, at the Ferncroft in Danvers. Unless you know everything there is to know about Rotary, you should attend this session. DG Tom has put together a great program.
A. (1) Club Service
Then, President Steve passed around information about NE Link. That's scheduled for September 26-27, in Worcester--basically 24 hours. But sign up for some of the program or all of it. The only way to register is online at : http://www.northeastlink.org/html/nel_rotreg_active.shtml. Go to the site to learn more about NE Link. And don't forget, unless you'd like to make a contribution, the club will pay for your attendance at NE Link and at the District Conference.
The final pass-around was a signup sheet for the barbecue at Mike and Stephanie Tallo's house. If you haven't done so already, let President Steve know you'll be there.
A. (2) Vocational Service
Grace Martins and Steve Smith will e-mail invitations to folks for our first breakfast meeting on THURSDAY, AUGUST 21ST. Mayor Bonfanti will be our guest speaker on August 21st after he cuts the ribbon opening this new era of Peabody Rotary. We'll have many other dignitaries, including DG Tom.
President Steve has signed the contract for the Taste Of The North Shore to be held on MARCH 24TH at the Danversport Yacht Club. Bob Sweeney has once again graciously and generously donated the raffle and entry tickets. They should be ready by September so we can sell them at the Golf Tournament.
A. (3) Community Service
There's a Golf Committee meeting every Monday at 9:00AM at Teddy Bettencourt's office at 30 Main Street. Start thinking about and asking potential sponsors as well as golfers. There are only 5 weeks left until September 22nd!! President Steve wants everyone to obtain a "Perfect 10"--a combination of 10 golfers, sponsors, donation items. He's working on a flyer and registration form which he'll e-mail soon.
Peggy Pedro spoke on behalf of the District after going on two club visits with DG Tom. Our district has received $86,000 back from RI to spend this year. This is from contributions we've made three years ago. So we do benefit greatly from the money sent to RI. Of that money, $16,500 will go for Simplified District Grants. There'll be five grants of $3,300 each. Clubs have to match only $1,700 of that amount. And there are $45,000 in Matching Grants. Application deadline for grants is October 18th. There'll be one $24,000 Ambassadorial Scholarship awarded from these funds as well. There may be enough funds available from the $40,000 left over from PDG Julia's term to fund another Ambassadorial Scholar. Other items Peggy mentioned were: the Water Committee met last week. President Steve will keep us updated on the Childhood Mortality initiative. Next year's GSE team will be visiting Johannesburg, South Africa, at the end of January for four weeks. Do you know anyone (non-Rotarian under age 45) who might want to go? The Johannesburg GSE team will visit our district from April 18th to May 16th. The District Conference will be on Friday and Saturday, May 1st-2nd, 2009, in Salem, MA. It will be at various venues and very affordable so as many Rotarians as possible can attend. Peggy also reminded us all about the District Membership/Foundation Conference on September 17th. As with PDG Julia's Polio Plus Challenge last year with the piggy banks, DG Tom is giving each club a pillow case ("Make Dreams Real") so we can fill it each week with coins and bills. Fred deNapoli got the ball rolling by generously donating his $187 raffle winnings. The whole purpose for this is to help eradicate polio. Mostly due to political and religious reasons, it's still evident in four countries--Pakistan, India, Afghanastan and Nigeria. ERADICATE is the key word.
A. (4) International Service
Mel Babner has the Entertainment Books. Who'll sell the most? (Ed.'s note: FYI: I saved the cost of the book using the coupons at Dick's Sporting Goods when I bought Celtics Championship items.) Many thanks to former members Dick Berg and Steve Blomerth for their efforts. If all books are sold, we'll make $1,000.
We'll be selling Penny Candy at the International Festival. Can one still buy candy for a penny? President Steve suggested that we sell bags for the kids (or adults) to fill with candy for a price yet-to-be-determined.
*
SAVE THE DATE: SEPTEMBER 17TH, from 3:00 TO 8:00PM. This is the date of the District's Membership and Foundation Forum at the Sheraton Ferncroft. This is where all Rotarians will learn more about how Rotary functions. And with this knowledge and tips from the Membership segment, we'll better be able to attract and retain more members. Please make every effort to attend.
Did you know that Larry Lucchino had been an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1973-4? NELink (September 26-27) is trying to get him to speak. The snag may be that the Red Sox are playing the Evil Empire (aka the Yankees) that weekend. For those who don't read the Rotarian (but you should!!), this month's issue tells us that the Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the LARGEST PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN THE WORLD!! By the way, the other locally well-known person who had been an Ambassadorial Scholar is former Lt. Governor Kerry Healy.
*
On August 21st, Mel Babner will deliver food for the Citizens For Adequate Housing families, temporarily housed in Salem, for the last time.
*
What do you do with your empty bottles and cans? (And we know there must be a lot of empty beer cans and bottles.) Please bring them (both beer and soda) to the meetings every week to give to Mel Babner. Every nickel helps!! Mel Thanks Dick Berg for his generous contribution.
There must be a ton of empty beer cans and bottles from July 4th weekend and all summer--please give them to Mel.
*
Our speaker scheduler, Grace Martins, is asking that you tell her of any people who may want to speak to the club or whom you think may be of interest to the club.
*
Happy Dollars: Sergeant-at-arms Jeff Doherty collected $70.
Reminder: If you see any news articles or pictures of our members, bring them in so the member can donate $$$ to the club. We can use the money!! But more important--we'd like to recognize and applaud our members.
*
50-50 Raffle: The pool was $187. Mike Tallo did not pick the Queen of Spades but FRED DENAPOLI did!!!!!! And he donated it all to the pillow case. Thanks for your generosity, Fred!! New deck of cards and new winning card next week. An appropriate way to start our new era.

1. IS IT THE TRUTH? 2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED? 3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIP? 4. WILL IT BE BENEFICAL TO ALL CONCERNED?
